Parent Counseling
Parenting Is Important Work
Being a parent is one of the most important things we can do in life – to influence the growth and development of another human being. However, it can also be one of the most challenging and sometimes frustrating things we can do! Oftentimes we feel overwhelmed by the daily grind of balancing work and family, keeping laundry under control, and getting the kids to bed on time so we might have some time to relax. Other stressors can pile up on top of all that such as caring for an elderly parent, managing what feels like constant sibling conflicts, or trying to co-parent when you are not on the same page. If you are a first time parent, a parent looking to strengthen your parenting skills, or a couple wanting to get on the same parenting page – I can help!
Becoming the Parent You Want To Be
Our main training for the critically important job of being a parent are the experiences we had being parented ourselves – the good and the bad. Taking a look at our own experience of being parented can help us identify our strengths and areas to improve as we move toward becoming the parents we want to be. Setting limits around behavior and helping your child with challenging emotions are two areas where most parents get stuck from time to time. No one wants to be a parent who yells or uses threats to get cooperation. You want to enjoy your children and for them to enjoy you – and this is possible!
I can help you build – or rebuild – a deep connection with your child. I will show you how:
- Listening to your child’s emotional moments can help them to make good choices and cooperate;
- Setting limits can define boundaries and also build connection;
- Play can be used to help your child with anxiety, emotional regulation, and building a sense of mastery, connection and self-confidence.
I can also help you and your spouse or partner get onto the same page as parents. It’s natural that we do not all come to parenting from the same perspective since we were all raised with different experiences. I can help parents productively explore their parenting styles and develop a common vision for how to approach this very important job of being a dad or a mom.
Getting Support for Yourself is Critical
You want to be your best self as a parent but perhaps you don’t know how to begin. Parenting is hard work and getting support for yourself is critical! I can assist you to identify what you want to improve, provide you with the tools to do it and help you put them into practice – no matter how old your child is. And most importantly I will help you make a plan for getting the ongoing support you need and deserve.
Parent counseling can be provided at my office or over the telephone in some cases. In addition to my individual work with parents and families I also give talks and teach classes. I can create a customized presentation for your organization or group.
