Family Counseling and Therapy

Family Counseling and TherapyAll Kinds of Families Struggle

Raising a family can be overwhelming and sometimes it feels like there is no way out of the difficulties you face. Even adult families can find themselves stuck in frustrating and difficult interactions that seem impossible to resolve. Stressors such as challenging child behavior, children with special needs, parenting disagreements, changes in the family structure, work or financial difficulties, caring for elders, family violence, substance abuse, mental or physical illness, or ongoing chronic conflict affect all kinds of families. However, you do not have to resign yourself to struggling endlessly with such problems.

Family Therapy Can Help

Family therapy can help families of all types – those with young children, teens, and young adults; step-and blended families; same sex and heterosexual couples; mature families; and even adult relatives living together. I am a skilled and compassionate family therapist and I can help you to find a way out of feeling overwhelmed and stuck. I will:

  • Clarify the problem and the issues that contribute to it;
  • Create a treatment plan addressing the needs and concerns of the various family members;
  • Ensure that everyone feels heard and supported;
  • Teach you to slow down and respond consciously instead of reactively;
  • Teach you to manage the stressors that have made life so challenging for your family; and
  • Help you identify resources in your community and support network.

As a part of family therapy, parents may also benefit from specialized parent counseling.

It’s never too late to repair or strengthen relationships and build a deeper connection and attachment to our loved ones. As human beings our brains actually need healthy interpersonal relationships to grow and thrive – even as adults – and current research backs this up. We are not designed to live in isolation! Family therapy can help you to create a warm and connected relationship among all your family members. When you feel more connected your stress response goes down and your brain is literally better able to manage the problems you face. I have many years of experience helping families connect and get the most out of their time together.
